A. —Qui est fidèle à l'observance religieuse. Elle était d'ailleurs devenue assez insensible, un peu inflexible, avec cette vie toute spirituelle qui s'ajoutait à sa nature froide, matée depuis des générations observantes (LA VARENDE, Contes fervents, Pinsonnière, 1948, p.72).
B. —[En parlant d'un religieux, le plus souvent franciscain] Qui entend pratiquer le strict respect de la règle religieuse primitive. Synon. observantin (infra rem.). Ainsi apparurent au XIVe siècle une observance et des frères observants dominicains et franciscains (FÉDOU Moy. Âge 1980).
III. —Substantif
A. —Celui, celle qui est fidèle à l'observance religieuse. Les observants assidus, qui assistent à la messe chaque dimanche, se confessent et communient à Pâques (Philos., Relig., 1957, p.44-1).
B. —En partic. Franciscain de stricte observance. Synon. observantin (infra rem.). Les Observants ont été unifiés par Léon XIII en 1897 sous le nom de Frères Mineurs sans autre qualificatif (Foi t.1 1968).
REM. Observantin, subst. et adj. masc. (Personne) qui est fidèle à l'observance religieuse. Synon. supra II B. Jésus n'est pas observantin; il néglige la pureté matérielle; il tient médiocrement au sabbat (RENAN, Hist. peuple Isr., t.5, 1892, p.74). En partic. Synon. supra III B. Religieux observantin. Frère mineur observantin (Ac. 1835, 1878).
